Solana District

Studio III | Fall 2005
Professor: David Hopman, ASLA
Individual Project: Wade A. Miller

Objective

Select a district in the area that has a discernible identity and document the history and character of this area using image boards. Apply the thematic design elements uncovered in the study of the district landmarks to the design of a parking area for a potential “New Urbanist” multifamily project in the selected district. The lot should be a multi-use space, interesting, and attractive with or without cars.

History and Character

Solana, an internationally acclaimed campus project located in Southlake and Westlake, Texas was chosen for the project. The 900-acre site is being developed in phases as a mixed-use development of low-rise campus office buildings, a Village Center comprised of hotel, retail, restaurant, educational and recreational space, and a single-family residential community.

Parking Area Design

Two design options were completed for the parking area. The first, a simple design, was completed with the sole objectives of meeting the LARE requirements for parking areas in this type of development. The second design, while meeting LARE requirments, was also to be a more creative and attractive space that was functional with and without cars.
